Penélope in all her Technicolour g(l)ory
Last night I went to see Volver. It was a great film in due Almodóvar style and even la Cruz was somewhat less annoying and too-perfect-to-be-real in Spanish than she is when she speaks English. Be that as she may, she is SO the patron saint of smokey eye-shadow. In fact, her make-up was so smokey it could almost be called barbecue!
What struck me once more about the advantage of good old European films over Hollywood ones was the fact that women look like women. I especially liked Lola Duenas who played Sole(dad) and even Ms. Cruz, blemish-free skin, doe-eyes, x-rated cleavage and all, could pass as a real woman thanks to the brilliantly selected clothes she wore. What would no doubt shout a-stylist-specialising-in-vintage-clothes-painstakingly-trawled-L.A.'s-super-chic-vintage-shops-for-months-to-select-this-outfit in an American film looked natural and damn hot on her in Volver.

The title song, sung/lip-synched by Estrella Morente/Penélope Cruz was goose-bump-inducingly beautiful, too.
Volver
Go, see!

Just tell your husband there's lots of cleavage, endless legs and sexy bums to see, perhaps that might motivate him somewhat?!
I also like some German films and series and some of the actors you mentioned. I'm sot so sure about Heiner L. and "our" Tobias M., though. The latter was brilliant in his pre-Rex-days when he starred in "die Piefke-Saga", a TV classic!
Erm...no, I don't think I personally know "Mr. Alcessa", but aren't all men predictable...
Speaking of German humour, I just loved "Der bewegte Mann" and "Das merkwürdige Verhalten geschlechtsreifer Großstädter zur Paarungszeit" (how's THAT for a tongue-twister?). Christane F. or rather "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" was cult when I was young, i.e. when dinosaurs were still around ;-)
I am absolutely clueless when it comes to German/Austrian movies...I actually can't even think of one that I have seen in the past 10 years, series like Rex not counted, of course. But I do like Spanish movies and have seen most of Almodovar opus. I liked Penelope in Belle epoque, many years ago, when she was just staring out, but am not really her biggest fan. And like Alcessa I will probably have to wait for the DVD of Volver, since my husband doesn't speaks Spanish and seeing it in Japanese is also not an option...just thinking of it makes me shiver!
